This Weeks Speaker
Roland Perry
"Author" |
|
This week we look forward to Roland Perry speak at our meeting. Roland has a fascinating story to tell, particularly in relation to his latest two books on the Light Horse and Monash. Roland Perry began his writing career as a journalist on The Age Melbourne from 1969 to 1973. After five years in England making documentary films, he had his first book, a novel---Program for a Puppet---published in 1979 by W.H. Allen and Hamlyn Books. It was a best-seller that was translated into eight languages. It allowed Perry to work full-time as an author More...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Perry

Next Weeks Speaker-Marika Mulqueen
Marika is a dynamic, inspiring and thoroughly interesting speaker and an extraordinary lady".
http://cyclingwitheddie.wordpress.com/category/people-profiles/
Marika says:
"In June 2009 I attempted to ride the entire Tour de France route as per the professional schedule for charity. The Tour de France is one of the most gruelling sporting events in the world. It's 3500 km long over 21 stages with the total climb for the ride equal to riding up three Mount Everests.
The 2009 route took me through France, Spain and Italy as well as over the Alps and the Pyrenees. An average days riding was 200km and myself and two other cyclists rode through extreme heat, snow, rain and strong wind. We endured falls, punctures, dehydration, hunger, being completely and utterly lost and run-ins with the police.
In my presentation I recount my adventure and how I managed to complete the challenge even though I'd only been training for five months beforehand and had taken up riding not long before that!"

Club Supports Relay for Life
What a great weekend. It was a pleasure to see members from the Rotary Club of Albert Park taking part in the Relay for Life walk for the Victorian Cancer Council last Saturday and Sunday. The event with a very busy schedule all went off extremely well, the weather although a little windy was good. All had a good time and our club raised the grander total of some $965.00 plus the walkers fee of $210.
Club Members/friends volunteers turned up and assisted with the BBQ. We sold out at lunchtime - with dinner being busy also.
Liz DeNittis would like to thank all those who came and walked as part of the Club Team and most of all the Volunteers for the BBQ.
The club would like to thank Liz for all her time and hard work to have the club involved with this event. Well done LIZ.
Pictured top left Rotarians Vicki Teschke and Henry Michaelsen joining in on the walk. Top Left BBQ helpers Stan Teschke, Joan Robison, Vicki Bird and granddaughter Bailey, Henry Michaelsen and David Gorman. Bottom Rotarian Vicki Teschke, Liz Denittis (also RFL organiser) Henry Michaelsen and Mayor City of Port Phillip Frank O'Connor.

Asylum Seeker Employment Project
The Rotary Club of Albert Park together with members from Brigidine Asylum Seekers
Project are working together on the Asylum Seeker Employment Project.
The first
challenge facing new arrivals in Australia is to find a job. Another big challenge is to become known in the local community. These two challenges are connected. It is said that 80% of job vacancies are never advertised and that many jobs are filled through word of mouth or through networking. Networking is talking to people you know about jobs.
New arrivals in Australia don't have any networks, which are so important, especially in getting their first job. This is especially in the case of Asylum Seekers because their families, friends and people they worked with in the past are not in Australia.
In order to help them become better known locally the RCAP has offered to assist asylum seekers associated the the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project by placing profiles of individual asylum seekers on their web site for their members. It is hoped that some of these members may be able to assist some of you with your job search or perhaps with work experience opportunities in Australian workplaces.
Please find attached the first of these profilesClick to view EBRAHEEM'S..
Should you be able assist with any employment opportunities or if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Ian Wavish ianwavish@hotmail.com or Robert Stone on rmstone@edmundrice.org |
